What Are Rats?
Rats are rodents and are found throughout every corner of Britain. The live in the countryside but mainly tend to live in cities and towns near human habitation. These creatures are highly adaptable and can live of a variety of food from rubbish to waste. Rats tend to make their nests underground, under buildings, in sheds or drains. Keepers of chickens and poultry often encounter rats as rats like to take advantage of chicken feed and bird feed.
Signs Of Rats
Rats like to eat sweet corn cobs, various root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and beetroot and cause cause much damage to crops both when they are growing and in places where they are being stored. You can usually identify rat crop destruction by parallel grooves in the produce where the rats teeth have bitten into the food. Rat’s also leave traces of their nests and tunnels with small entrances in soil around 30-40mm long. Rat droppings are pellet shaped with rounded ends and are roughly around 5mm long and 15mm wide. Adult rats in terms of size are one of the larger rodents and are around 21cm long and have a hairless tail.
Why Rats Are A Problem
Rats cause a lot of damage to food that humans intend to eat either at the growing stage or after it has been harvested. Rats will eat food that has been provided for agricultural animals, poultry and wild birds. They are also often infected with a disease known as Weil’s disease. If infected the disease causes a form of jaundice which is known as leptospirosis.
Rats also like to burrow and make nests in compost heaps as the loose material is easy for the rat to burrow through and can keep young safe and warm in the winter.
